Popeye, the Sailor Man, isn’t an Indian, but his love for spinach makes him as Indian as any Indian can get. You put him in any situation, he pulls out his can of green supplements, gobbles it up, and uses his muscles to save the day. And that’s probably how fervently and fondly Indians have their Paneer Palak, the Hindi word for Cottage Cheese and Spinach, a staple in Indian restaurants.

Paneer palak (or Palak Paneer) needs no introduction in Indian households. It consists of palak and paneer (cottage cheese). So, the dish is essentially a spinach curry with sautéed cheese. Some of the other ingredients include diced onions, chopped tomatoes and whole or chopped green chillies. It is one of the simplest dishes to prepare, yet it is a must-have even in the richest of Indian weddings.

This spinach-cheese wonder is also a rare recipe that is full of taste and nutrition. Spinach is an excellent source of vitamins and paneer fuels calcium and protein, making it some sense a nutritional powerhouse. According to noted nutritionist Priya Kathpal, paneer palak is full of calcium and phosphorous, and it plays a catalytic role in heart and muscle function. The vitamins B2 and B12 in cottage cheese help convert the food into usable energy.

“When you are preparing your diet plan for the day, do ensure you add a palak paneer to it. This dish is very low in calories, has less fat and is filling indeed. The best thing about spinach is that you can eat it in chunks but still consume very little calories,” says Kathpal[1].

A leading health website in a feature on the dish also revealed that the recipe could lower your blood pressure[2]. It stated: Spinach contains antioxidants which keep cholesterol levels low and open up those arteries in your heart that could be blocked. It also contains folate which is great for the cardiovascular system. The content of magnesium in spinach shall surely help you lower high blood pressure.

In fact, not many people know that during the Great Depression in America in the 1930s, the US government was looking for ways to promote the ‘economical’ spinach as a meat substitute to uplift the country’s gross nutritional consumption[3]. And to spread the word, they decided to hire one of America’s favourite celebrities, Popeye the Sailor Man, who eventually became the only superhero who would turn into a superhuman with a mouthful of spinach.
